Replacing a windshield is a necessity when you have a crack or leak in the one you have now. There’s no denying that anyone looking to replace their windshield will need to call a professional. Sure, there are some DIY mechanics out there, but the average person is going to have to shop around. We highly recommend you look for an Auto Glass Safety Council Registered Company.
We’re breaking down the process of windshield replacement for you so that you can search for an expert who follows all the right steps. The last thing you want is to have an inferior replacement job because you’ll have to do it all over again, which means more time and sometimes more money for you.
Step 1 - The Inspection
Your Auto Glass Replacement expert will inspect the new windshield thoroughly. They’ll want to make sure that it’s the correct replacement glass and size for your vehicle. The professionals will check the new windshield for any scratches, defects, or cracks before they install it into your car.
They also clean and remove contaminants from the bonding area. This is done to make sure the primer and/or urethane adhere properly. Trust us, you don’t want a new windshield that isn’t sealed properly, and this is an essential step in that happening.
Step 2 - Prep for the Safety of the Technician and the Vehicle
Several hazards come with replacing a windshield. To avoid them, professionals wear special gear to protect themselves. They also take measures to protect the vehicle from being damaged in the process. Some ways a car is protected include covering the interior, covering the exterior and removing the cowl and moldings.
Step 3 - Remove the Old Windshield
Next, the expert removes your old windshield. First, they cut through the adhesive that is holding the old glass in place. When it’s free, they remove it from the vehicle. This is the point where any broken glass is also removed.
Step 4 - Prepping the Surface
Now that the old windshield is out, the technician will clean the surface area so that the bonding process isn’t compromised. This includes removing any urethane or adhesive that’s left behind and getting rid of any rust or dirt.
Step 5 - Applying the Adhesive
Experts will use a urethane that is specifically designed for automotive jobs like this. The adhesive is applied to the frame before the installation of the new windshield. The type of urethane used in this job is important. You don’t want a poor bond to prevent safety issues or leaks. You will want to ensure your technician is certified by the adhesive manufacture and that the adhesive meets or exceeds all pertinent Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
Step 6 - Glass Installation
This is the point where the technicians place your new windshield into the frame. The technicians will make any needed adjustments so that your new glass fits as well as the original windshield.
Step 7 - Reassemble the Vehicle
If the cowl or any other part of the vehicle has to be removed to make installation easier, this is the time the technicians will put it back together. We recommend installing new wipers when replacing the windshield if needed.
Step 8 - Quality Assurance Check
Once the vehicle has been reassembled and is ready to return to the owner, an expert team will do a quality assurance check. You should receive your vehicle back with everything in place and aligned.
Step 9 - Post-Installation Discussion
After the installation, an expert team member will discuss any paperwork or warranties that come with the job. They will also give you instructions on how to care for your windshield and the protection new installations will need during the first 24 to 48 hours.
